NOTE: The Google Play Store app is included in this list but it only
allows you to purchase Books, Magazines, Music and buy or rent Movies for streaming or download. It also permits in-app purchases and app license checks. It does not allow for the purchase, downloading or upgrading
of Android apps.
NOTE: Google Play Movies & TV app will not currently stream or download movies onto the nabi 2 Tablet. Initial testing indicates that it does work on the nabi Jr. Tablet.
The required apks need to be installed in sequence, so please ensure that you follow the step-by-step instructions below or in the video supplied by Fan-a-Tech Robyn and everything will run smoothly. Updates have been placed at the top of this post for easy access, once you've gone through the original process.

Thank you for all of your hardwork
I also appreciate your hard work. My son really likes his Nabi 2 but he really wants all the games from my google play account. Please continue working on full google play functionality so I don't have to switch it out for a Nexus 7. Thank you.
Apps for another Android device can be easily backed up and installed on the nabi 2 Tablet by following one of two methods.
1. Backing up with Google Drive!
2. Wanting to Play! using App Backup & Restore + Micro SD Card.
Thank you. I will give it a go after I get off of
work today.
Thank you I got most of our apps installed. For some reason I can't get Shadowgun to download the game file after it installs from Drive. Currently we don't have any other Tegra 3 devices other than the Nabi 2. Is there a way to get the Tegra 3 games that I payed for onto the Nabi 2? I returned my TF201 Prime because of too many problems :(
I'd suspect that the app requires an additional download in order to install, which is probably linked to the Google Play Store. When testing out some of the free Tegra 3 games, this is what I came across for a couple.
ok. That makes sense. Thank you.
I am getting an error when installing the framework. It simply says app not installed. Is there a fix for this?
That's odd that framework would not install. I'd first try downloading and installing it again. If that does not work, my only suggestion would be a factory reset on the tablet, then trying it again.
any luck with trying to get the app store to work with the nabi 2?
I think I followed all the instructions but google play force closes even after I cleared the cache. Please help. I am going to try your drive suggestion for apps. Crossing my fingers. Thanks for all your work.
I got googleplay installed using these steps... it isnt able to download apps without the force close issue.
So,
Looking for working APK for Netflix and eventually Google Play, once thats figured out I guess.
Jon,
If this post states that the Google Play Store app does not allow apps to be downloaded, installed or updated. It can only be used for purchasing books and renting then streaming or downloading movies.
As for Netflix, you can install it through the Amazon Appstore. Check out my post on installing and configuring the Amazon Appstore, then just search for and install Netflix.
Thank you as well for all your hard work, my daughter loves her Nabi. Being a dad who was ADHD before they even coined the phrase, I already see the difference in my 3 year olds attention span, she is remarkably brilliant, getting her to pay attention is her downfall, but he Nabi has been a beacon for her this past weekend, chores have never been so fun ^_^
Google Framework, Login services, and playstore will need to have root access. They need to be installed on the /system partition to function properly. Not the /data partition, which is were they are installed via the above method. I think that if you rooted the tablet, installed Google framework/playstore in /system/apps directory via any root-browser or adb, then fixed permissions. Then playstore would work without issue. But I may be wrong.
You're correct, however rooting the tablet would void it's warranty and potentially lead to some parents bricking them. At this point in time, this methodology is the best solution to providing most Google App functionality, without rooting.
Is there any option to boot this Nabi2 tablet from a memory card with Android OS ? Thanks.
Does Hangout with Video work with the Nabi2 installation of Google+? TIA -
Not sure if Hangout with Video works with Google+. You'd have to try it out.
what about 1mobilemarket ftom cnet.. lolms like they got a lot of apps that amazon doesnt.. i was gonna try downloading the apk... any thoughts?
When I tried to open the google play store, I received an error message that says:
Application not installled
An existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed. Can you please advise me on what to do next? Thanks
It looks like video on Google+ Hangout works fine. I haven't actually called anyone but I get good video with the app so there's no reason it wouldn't work. Thanks for all the work you've done -
I know there's no gps chip in the Nabi2, but is it possible to set the tablet to pick up gps from the network when it's on wifi? I couldn't find any settings to use with Google Maps and Google Earth. TIA :-D
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905674 a person has rooted the nabi 2 and got the play store working!
Anyone else get the above listed root working? No luck with it here.
ROOT from that post worked for me. He is actually updating it to also have a custom recovery.
I've rooted and installed numerous ROMS on HTC phones in the past from following instructions on xda-developers, but I'm having no luck understanding the above thread. I've never used adb nor fastboot, and I'm having no luck. I guess I'll just have to wait for someone to perfect the process or create a YouTube step-by-step.
Got it. I needed to check again in Device Manager to make sure the right Android ADB driver was installed. I had installed PDAnet, but I think it still had my HTC phone driver installed when I first attempted root.
Hi all, probably a stupid question, but installed the APK on step 7, then Youtube, BBC iPlayer, and a few others. They all work fine on Daddy mode, but when switching to nabi mode, I can't see the apps.
Do I need to install all the step 13 APKs for it to work?
Thanks,
James
James you just need to make the apps available in nabi Mode. Launch the Add Apps app in Daddy Mode, check the apps you want to make available and uncheck the ones you don't want to to show up in nabi Mode. Go to nabi Mode and click on the All Apps icon in the top right corner. Click and hold any apps you'd like to make available on the desktop and then drag them to where you want.
Be sure to check out the online User Manual for tips on this and many other user interface functions.

It is crashing because you do not have the latest version of the Google Play Store installed. Check the latest update above.
Is there any way to install the google play store on the original nabi (nabi 1)?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Yes just check out this blog post.

Try rebooting your wifi router and/or modem. I tried a movie last night and it worked fine.

If you carefully read the beginning of this post you will see that Google Play store is not usable for downloading apps.
You can purchase and download all of Rovio's apps from the Amazon Appstore. I'd highly recommend Bad Piggies and Amazing Alex beyond the standard Angry Birds apps. I'd also recommend purchasing them over downloading the free versions, as it emliminates those annoying ads which can use up to 75% more battery, then the same purchased app that has no ads.

As for the internet, try using the Browser app instead of the Maxthon apps which have purposeful limitations. You can also use Chrome which is available through this post.

I'd recommend waiting for the nabi XD Tablet which will hopefully launch next month before Christmas and announced on the main Facebook page. It is a 10" tablet that is being marketed to tweens and teens and will include Fooz Kids University apps for Grade 6+.
Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds interesting, any idea of the cost?
Thanks, I found the fb information regarding the XD. It sounds like the right fit for our family. Will it be available at Best Buy or will we need to order it from Nabi?
Hi,
I downloaded a app to google drive. How can I install it on my nabi 2. Can you give instructions on both methods to get apps from google play to nabi 2. Or point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Lisa
For my comment above, I would like to get spy mouse on it.
i have tried these steps on multiple nabi 2 devices, everything instals fine, google play store opens i can purchase a movie, but when i try to play or download the movie it will either freeze or it will say cannot play until move of the movie is DL'ed. Well when hanging around and waiting and hour and checking again and receiving the same error message, on 2 seprate wifi connections, i think we can rule out rebooting the wifi. Has anyone got this to work? Has anyone DL or played a movie from google play? If so please provide version of Google play store and movie and also firmware of nabi 2 device. I have 3 devices and if i cannot get this to function they maybe up for sale.
Looks like DL'ed music from google play store also does not work. It will allow the purchase but then it will not play the song, anyone get the music to work?
after reboot google music seems to play. in nabi and daddy mode. However the movies seem to still be an issue. after reboot i tried to play movie and it just seems to sit there and try to load yet nothing ever happens.
at first the issue seems to be i used the wrong browser, now with it installed using the correct i am still getting issue playing video maybe internet this time, will update later. Just to be sure i dont need to install all the recoommended apps correct?
OK, so we bought a Nabi 2 for one of our kiddos and have downloaded the Google Play following the steps above. I then logged into my google acct via our laptop and transferred the apps to the Nabi from the google cloud, but I cannot find the apps on the Nabi anywhere. What do I do now?

If you are talking about Google Drive, when you click to download the apks, they should launch automatically or be shown in the bottom right corner by the clock. Once downloaded they should be available under the Download app, if they do not automatically launch.
Please help me understand. I think I understand that the Google Play Store app will not allow me to download apps to the Nabi2. BUT, once I follow the install process outlined above, can I log on to the Play Store from my PC's web browser and then install apps to the Nabi2 via the Install -> Send To function? I guess what I am asking is will the Nabi2 show up as a registered device in Play Store thus allowing me to install apps from the PC?

While the nabi 2 Tablet will show up in the on the Google Play website you cannot install apps directly to it, as the Google Play Store app that you are installing does not allow purchased, downloads or updates. The install from the website still goes through the app.
You can however sideload apps from other Android devices, by using AirDroid. Search for that in the blog for directions.
i bought a movie and a song on google play but not sure how to now listen/watch what i have purchased
If you receive the following error message "The page contains too many server redirects", I'm sorry but this is limited to only a few people. There doesn't seem to be any clear answer for this on the web.
Here are a couple of repeated themes to try. Try one and then if that doesn't work try the next one.
1. Make sure first you are using the Browser app and neither of the Maxthon apps.
2. Launch Browser, click the Settings icon (3 stacked squares), Settings option, Privacy & Security, Clear Cache.
3. Launch Browser, click the Settings icon, Request Desktop Site, Check Box.
4. Download Opera Mobile Browser from the Amazon Appstore and use it. http://www.amazon.com/Opera-Software-ASA-Mobile-Browser/dp/B004UIOUHC
5. Download Opera Mini Browser from the Amazon Appstore and use it. http://www.amazon.com/Opera-Software-ASA-Mini-Browser/dp/B004LPEHCW
6. Download Dolphin Browser from the Amazon Appstore and use it.

Yes all you need to do is double click on it and it will start the installation process.
So on 3 different nabi 2 devices, i have yet to get google play movies to work. It will never DL the movie and or just play the movie. This has been tested on 2 different internet connections. I have not seen or heard from anyone else besides scott that this actually works, so again has anyone on hear seen this work? Scott can you upload a video of this working?
Side note if you do test this and it does not work, google will I refund my movie rental and or purchase.

It is crashing because you do not have the latest version of the Google Play Store installed. Check the latest update above.
I have had the latest version and it has crashed and slowed down the tablet quit a bit. I guess i will have to wait to see if google play actual units with the nabi 2.
Scott - I've followed all the steps and everything appears to install and work correctly. My issue is that my nabi2 device is not showing up in my Google play store. Any ideas why?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
I would like to install Youtube and Subway surfers alone. Don't want other Google services. Do I have to install Google Play Store?
Or Google Services Framework, Google Play Services, YouTube, Subway Surfers are enough?
Going forward, for updating Google services to the latest version, do I have to check this website frequently for the update and update my Nabi2 or youtube and subway surfers app will work without any further updates as long as I run the installed Youtube and Subway surfers?
I do understand that if I have to install a new apk which checks for latest Google service version then I might have to update the google services. Ofcourse, we are expecting you to continue updating google services apk in this website.
Thanks
I purchased a few apps through Google play on a different tablet, sent them to a micro sd card. Inserted the sd card in the Nabi 2 but the it wont read the micro sd card. I've tried downloading music to the card as well yet the nabi 2 will not read the sd card. I check the storage through settings and it shows I have a sd card and memory is taken up on it, yet I don't know how to access it. Please help!
Hello there,
I just bought a NABI2 2 days ago for my kiddo, I m trying to set it all up before Christmas. Now I want to try to download the google play and I saw you instructions which looks easy ,I will give it a try after work, however I read elsewhere that downloading the google play requires roothing the NABI and this avoid the guaranty. Now I m not tech savy, not I want to be LOL and I have no idea what roothing means. So I just wanted to know if doing this (previous intructions) will void my guaranty??.
Thanks sooo much! this blog is awesome, I know I will spend a lot of time here for the next month or so. :)
Found my answer here! Thanks sooo very much!
Now I m confuse after I read more comments, question still stand. Is following previous intructions rooting your tablet??.. I m sorry for my ignorance..

Natalie this method is known as sideloading which does not void the warranty of the product. There are a number of Google App updates that came out over the last day so I'll be updating the post later this evening. If you need help, it is best that you post or message me through my Facebook page.
Thank you very much,
I m at work and I dont get FB here, I will get on it when I get home tonight. :) Thank you very very much.
scott, the only reason i want the play store on my nabi 2 is to download foxfi. since we cant upload anything from play store yet... is there any other way that you know for me to use my phones internet connection to power my tablets?
Very helpful blog! THANK YOU!
Anyway to get Spy Mouse on the Nabi? Amazon has it, but only for Kindle. And Google Play has it, but that doesn't help right now. I'd try this sideloading business, but don't have another android device.
My son LOVES this game; wants my iPad all the time because of it. I'd love to get it on the Nabi!

Unfortunately, Spy Mouse is a paid licensed app, so it is something I can offer on my blog. I'm constantly looking for other options for gaining access to Google Play Store, so it may be possible to access sometime in the future.

Foxfi only needs to be installed on the phone in order for it to work, it does not need to be installed on the tablet. You create the hotspot on the phone and then access it through the wifi connection on the tablet.
I have side loaded some apps (from google play on my galaxy s3) that stopped working after needing a license update (dr. sues books). Then I had mylilponies and lilpetshop by gameloft stop working after I ran this update today. Not sure if it is the license issue or the google services update. Any ideas? I have been working on this thing for 2 weeks and was really excited to get some apps loaded on it but now I am worried they will stop working. Is there a list of compatible side loading apps from google play?

It is available through the Amazon Appstore.

Hi,
Thanks for doing all this work. I am trying to download the Google Services Framework, but the provided link seems to be downloading as a document and then never finishes downloading, it always says "in process?" Any ideas on how I can get the framework installed?
Merry Christmas!
I did all the the above stuff to get google framework, etc on the nabi, and now I am haveing problems with several things. For example, "Switch Kids" is closing unexpectly and I all my children that are under my account (we have 3 nabis) arent showing up in SwitchKids. Did I do something in correctly... I've thought about factory reset but I dont want to loose all the stuff I've already downloaded.
Ok, got the google app store going.. it is a BOOOOHOOOO not being able to buy any apps though... :( . I have a 2 year old, we bouth this tablet because I wanted a tablet and I was going to buy a regular one (kindle, nook, etc) , but I knew my kid will be hanging off my leg asking me to use whatever table I would have got. Since 2 year old aren't very gentle I decided to buy a Nabi, cause we both could use it but it is such a boomer that I cannot install apps like facebook from the Google store, and lets be honest, there is not cool apps for adults at the nabi app store... where are we going to be able to download apps from google play?. Anyone know?.
Honestly I love the Nabi, but my kid still too little and I have the tablet like %75 of the time... I m thinking in returned it and buy a new version when things like downloading apps from google play are availble. Not to sounds mean or anything I m just saying you know. I just want things to be accesible and more than anything SIMPLE.. not having to go thru 20 steps to download the google store to look at thing cause I can download an app... :( anyway those are my thoughts.
I have taken care of the two year old. I have downloaded lots of games and videos (and Netflix) to keep him occupied on our upcoming out-of-country excursion. His mother has been take care of as her email and browser (e.g., Facebook) work.
That leaves us, the grandparents. My wife wants a eReader and several eBooks to peruse; I want an OpenOffice-equivalent that will transfer notes back to MS Word when we get home. Both are availabe of play.google.com but not yet available on the Nabi 2. Is there an alternate source? Once I have the eReader I can go to Google for the books, yes?

So now I have google play but I can't get any apps, just crashes. Kind of missing the point of doing all this to put the play store on when it's not useable.
"It also permits in-app purchases and app license checks."
What is an in-app ?

If you read the actual blog post, it tells you what it is for. If you have another Android device, you can use this in conjunction with sideloading methods provided in this blog to install and run licensed apps.

An in-app purchase is purchasing of coins, energy, spells, weapons, etc. for use within a specific app.
Will this process work for the kindle fire?

In theory it should, if the tablet allows you to sideload apps. I have no experience with the Kindle tablets, as they are not sold in Canada. These apps are specific to Android 4.0 ICS.
i already installed google services framework but the open tab isnt highlighted, i cant open it.
how do i side load apps from my samsung galaxy s3 to the nabi 2?

I downloaded goole play and google play tv and movies exactly as it say. Then I bought cars the movie and when I try to open it in google play tv and movies it acts like it is going to load but never does anything. it does the same thing if I try to download it so that my kids can watch it on the plane. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted the nabi 2 and rebooted the wireless router but still I am getting nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Read the blog post:
NOTE: Google Play Movies & TV app will not currently stream or download movies, it is only available on this page for testing purposes.
Scott,
Followed the instructions with success to get Google Play store. However, my rented movie will not play in browser and what app do you use and how to download for offline viewing since Google Play Movies does not work. I can see the rented movie in my account, my movies on Play Store webpage but unable to figure out how to download or watch. If I press play a blank popup appears and it doesn't play. I would prefer to download directly to the Nabi 2.
Please advise,
Thanks!
after following the directions to the letter, I keep getting the error after Step 21 about Google Play having stopped. I have cleared the data after force closing app. I get the error after trying to download the free Temple Run app from Google Play.

NOTE: The Google Play Store app is included in this list but it only allows you to purchase Books, Magazines, Music and buy or rent Movies for streaming or download. It also permits in-app purchases and app license checks. It does not allow for the purchase, downloading or upgrading of Android apps.
If you are looking to install Temple Run go to this page.

As stated at the beginning of this blog post and beside the app download.

We're awaiting a new version of the app with hopes that it will again work on the nabi 2 Tablet.

Google Talk does not support video chat on the nabi 2 Tablet.
Skype comes pre-installed on the tablet and allows for video calls.
Hi Scott. Great job and much appreciation for your work.
One question, is it really necessary to download any other apks than what's listed under #13? My daughter is 6 and does not need all aspects of google (maps, earth, magazines, contacts etc) I just want to make sure the games she currently plays on my table (subway surfer)will work.

No only the apks listed under step #13 are necessary.
I've been able to sideload most of my kid's apps from my phone to the nabi, but have not been able to load any of the Dr Panda apps. I always get an error message during the queuing stage.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

The app you mention is most likely has DRM restrictions, meaning that it cannot be backed-up or sideloaded. This is sometimes done by mistake, but most times the developer just does not want the app to be shared around.
This can be easily checked by using Astro File Manager and its Application Manager option. It highlights apps that have DRM restrictions by putting (private) beside the backup check box.
