LAST UPDATE - Googlie Booglie!

UPDATE (December 19, 2013):  This 17 month old journey has come to an end today!
The latest OTA update v2.3 for the nabi 2 tablet can now be installed and includes the upgrade to Android 4.1 and Google Mobile Services.  Simply follow these detailed instructions that I've created and you are on your way to upgrading.

For those of you who have successfully used this process over the past 17 months and have the current versions of the Google Play Store and Google Play Services installed you do not have to worry about uninstalling them.  The same goes with the other Google Apps.  You will actually be a head of the curve, as the ones associated with the OTA update are older.  This simply means that when the OTA update is completely installed and you launch into Parent Mode, Google Play Store, Google Play Services and any Google Play Apps you have installed will not need further updating.

Want to watch a YouTube video? Looking to create a Google Document?  Have to upload a file to your Google Drive account?  Want to surf the web using the Chrome browser?  Looking to read your favorite Magazine or Novel?  Need to rent and download a Movie for a car trip?  Want to sideload a licensed app from another Android device and have it work?  Want to use a Pattern screen lock, but want to have the peace of mind to log in a different way, if you forget it?  If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then you'll want to follow the steps outlined in this post to enhance your regular edition nabi 2 or nabi JR 4GB tablets running Android's 4.0.4 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) OS.  Unfortunately all other nabi tablets are running the Android 4.1.1 (aka Jelly Bean) OS and this process will not work when you come to install the Google Play Store app.

NOTE: The Google Play Store app is included in this list but it only allows you to purchase Books, Magazines, Music and buy or rent Movies for streaming or download.  It also permits in-app purchases and app license checks.  It does not allow for the purchase, downloading or upgrading of Android apps.

The required apks need to be installed in sequence, so please ensure that you follow the step-by-step instructions below and everything will run smoothly.

NOTE:  All additional Google Apps can now be found under the following posts: Googlie Booglie Essentials and Googlie Booglie Optionals.

INSTALLING GOOGLE PLAY STORE:
1. Power on the nabi 2 or nabi JR 4GB Tablet.
2. Log into Mommy/Daddy Mode.
3. Launch the Browser app.
4. Type everythingnabi into the address bar and hit the Enter key.
5. Tap on the Everything Nabi! link.

6. Locate the Googlie Booglie! post under the Popular Posts of the Week.
7. Tap on this Google Services Framework link to begin the installation process.

8. Tap on the Download button.

9. Tap on the Download link in the bottom right corner, once the download has completed.

10. Tap the Install button.

11. Tap the Done button.
12. Close the Browser tab for the file just downloaded.
13. Tap to download and install the following apks in order.  Follow steps 8-12 for each apk until all are installed.
    •  Setup Wizard - Wizard to setup Gmail.
    •  Google Account Manager - Google login system.
    •  Google Calendar Sync - Sync system for calendar.
    •  Google Contacts Sync - Sync system for contacts.
    •  Network Location - Provides location through towers instead of GPS.
    •  My Uploads
    •  Google Play Services v4.0.34 (924341-32) (2013-11-22) - Integrated Google Play Store with Google + and Google Accounts.  To work correctly, some apps require Google Play Services to be installed and up to date.
    •  Google Play Store v4.5.10 (2013-12-09) - App, Book, Magazine and Movie market.

NOTE: If upgrading to the latest level of Google Play Services or Store, all you need to do is download and install the files again.  None of the other apks need to be reinstalled.

14. After installing the Google Play Store apk, tap the Open button.
15. Tap the Existing or New buttons depending on if you have a Google Account or not.  The following steps assume that you already have an account.

16. Sign in with your Google Account information.
17. Tap the Sign In button.
18. Check or uncheck the Backup and Restore option.
19. Tap the Next button.
20. Review the Google Play Terms of Service and tap the Accept button.
21. Tap on the 3 square boxes in the top right corner to access a list of options.

23. Tap on the Auto-update apps option.

26. Under the General heading, uncheck the Notifications option.

27. Under User Controls heading, ensure that Password option is checked to prevent any unwanted purchases from the Goggle Play Store, without the user first entering the Google Account password.  This functionality replaces the previous PIN option from older versions of the Google Play Store.
28. Exit the Google Play Store by tapping the Home soft key.

CAUTION: Do not update or attempt to install any apps, as it will force close the Google Play Store.  The apk file installed is not fully functional on the nabi 2 or nabi JR 4GB Tablets.  It does however allow for the purchase of Books, Movies and Music and in-app game content.  The following pop-up will appear if you attempt to update or purchase an app.  If you see this pop-up go to Step 29 for instructions on how to reset the Google Play Store and remove the message.

NOTE: This message will also appear if either the Google Play Services or Google Play Store apps you have installed are out of date.  Please check back here to install the updated file(s).  If the updated file is not yet available, please feel free to reach out to my Facebook page and request it, as I might not have noticed that the change has occurred myself.

NOTE:
When you've completed the apk installations, tap on the Downloads icon and delete all of the downloaded apks, as their file names are coded and not of much use.

RESETTING GOOGLE PLAY STORE:
If you ever see the following pop-up message it most likely means that Google Play Store has attempted to purchase, download or update an app.  Unfortunately this functionality is not supported with this workaround and you'll need to complete the following steps in order to restore the Google Play Store functionality.

Backing Up with Google Drive!

If you have apps on another Android device (Android 2.3 or lower) that you've purchased from Google Play, you can easily back them up and enjoy them now.  This method makes use of the Cloud rather than a Micro SD Card for transferring the apks between your Android device with Google Play Store and the nabi 2 Tablet.  If you have an Android device that uses Android 3.2 or higher, then the AirDroid method should work for you.

NOTE: If you purchased and/or installed apps through the nabi App Zone or Amazon Appstore, reinstall them on the nabi 2 Tablet through these markets.  This will ensure that if the developer releases an update with enhancements or fixes, that you can take advantage and quickly update your existing apps.

Wanting to Play!

All of us are, except for Fan-a-Tech Eric who is officially Playing! Now Eric is tasked with coming up with an installation methodology for us laymen.  While we wait, there are still a number of good alternative markets that can be used including the nabi App Zone, the Amazon Appstore1Mobile MarketAppBrainAppoliciousAndroidPitAndroidZoom, and GetJar .

If you have apps on your original nabi Tablet or other Android device that you've purchased from Google Play, you can easily back them up and enjoy them now.  Fan-a-Tech Aleasha created a YouTube video that takes you through the basic steps in doing this.  As some parents have struggled through this, I thought I'd provide some step-by-step instructions.

NOTE: If you purchased and/or installed apps through the nabi App Zone or Amazon Appstore, reinstall them on the nabi 2 Tablet through these markets.  This will ensure that if the developer releases an update with fixes or enhancements, that you can take advantage and quickly update your existing apps.

REVISED - Installing & Configuring the Amazon Appstore!

Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to install and configure the Amazon Appstore app on any tablet in Fuhu`s nabi product line.

For those of you wanting to access the Amazon.com Appstore (United States), please begin at Step 1
.  If you would like to install one of the other regional Appstores from Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain or the United Kingdom, skip down to here.

DO NOT SKIP SETTING THE PARENTAL &
IN-APP PURCHASE CONTROLS.

NOTE: If you are already using the Amazon Appstore on another Android device or have an Amazon.com account for product purchases, be sure to log in with same account.  This will allow you to install compatible apps that you've already paid for and prevent the need to manage multiple accounts.  These can be accessed under My Apps and then selecting the Cloud option.

Be sure to take advantage of Amazon's Free App of the Day, everyday!  If the free app is kid-friendly, I list it on my Fan-a-Tech Scott Facebook page.

Finally, to ensure that there are no unwanted or unexpected apps purchased and installed from the Amazon Appstore, it is highly recommended that you install and setup the Application Protection app.

Though I'd encourage everyone to read through the entire post, these links will take you to the various sections covered, if you're looking for something specific.
